Background of the study:
Forensic anthropology is traditionally associated with criminal investigations, yet its application in resolving land ownership disputes has emerged as a novel approach in Ilesa East. Here, forensic experts analyze human remains and historical data to help determine the identity of long-deceased landowners, which can have significant legal implications (Olatunji, 2023; Ogunyemi, 2024). Land disputes in Osun State are often complicated by a lack of clear documentation and conflicting oral histories. Forensic anthropology offers an objective method to corroborate historical claims through the analysis of skeletal markers and other bioarchaeological evidence. Such approaches not only aid in the legal resolution of disputes but also contribute to preserving cultural heritage and historical narratives (Olatunji, 2023). The integration of scientific techniques into land dispute resolution has the potential to bring clarity and fairness to cases that have long been mired in controversy (Ogunyemi, 2024).

Statement of the problem:
Land ownership disputes in Ilesa East are exacerbated by conflicting historical narratives and insufficient documentary evidence. Traditional resolution methods have proven inadequate, and the absence of scientific validation complicates legal claims. A critical examination of forensic anthropology’s role is necessary to resolve these disputes (Olatunji, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To examine the application of forensic anthropology in resolving land disputes.
  2. To evaluate the reliability of bioarchaeological evidence in legal cases.
  3. To recommend protocols for integrating forensic methods in land ownership resolutions.

Research questions:

  1. How can forensic anthropology assist in resolving land disputes?
  2. What is the reliability of skeletal and historical evidence in these cases?
  3. How can forensic methods be standardized for legal applications?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Forensic anthropology significantly aids in resolving land ownership disputes.
  2. Bioarchaeological evidence is a reliable source for historical verification.
  3. Standardized forensic protocols will improve dispute resolution outcomes.

Significance of the study:
This study will offer a new perspective on resolving land disputes using forensic anthropology, potentially transforming legal practices in Ilesa East by integrating scientific evidence with traditional claims (Ogunyemi, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the application of forensic anthropology in resolving land ownership disputes in Ilesa East Local Government Area. It does not extend to other regions or types of property disputes.

Definitions of terms:

  • Land ownership disputes: Legal conflicts regarding the rightful owner of land.
  • Forensic anthropology: The application of anthropological methods to legal issues.
  • Bioarchaeological evidence: Biological data derived from archaeological contexts.
